DETERMINATION OF ANTI-FUNGAL PROPERTIES OF THE AFRICAN MISTLETOE SPECIES: Loranthus micranthus L
نویسندگان
چکیده
The anti-fungal activity of the leaves of African mistletoe plant used in traditional and folkloric medicine was studied using standard procedures. The methanolic extracts of mistletoe leaves harvested from three different host trees {Kola acuminata, Irvingia gabonensis and Persea americana} were tested against clinical isolates of some common pathogenic fungi {Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger} using the agar diffusion method. The results obtained indicate that all the test extracts had some activities against the microorganisms. When compared with standard antifungal agent {Ketoconazole} as positive control, none of the extracts showed any significant activity {P < 0.05} against the test micro organisms. All the extracts exhibited better activities towards Aspergillus than against Candida. There were, however, slight variations in the level of activities as shown by the mistletoe leaf extracts from the different hosts towards both fungi. These experimental data show that the folkloric use of mistletoe pastes in the treatment of fungal infections may not be scientifically founded. UKWUEZE, S. Loranthus micranthus Linn. is a medicinal plant from the Loranthaceae family commonly known as an eastern Nigeria species of the African mistletoe and is widely used in folkloric medicine to cure various ailments and diseases. It is semiparasitic plant because of growing on various host trees and shrubs and absorbing mineral nutrition and water from respective host. Hence, the phytochemicals an...
متن کاملIsolation and structure elucidaton of polyphenols from Loranthus micranthus Linn. parasitic on Hevea brasiliensis with antiinflammatory property
The present study was carried out to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activities of polyphenols isolated from the leaves of mistletoe (Loranthus micranthus Linn.) parasitic on Hevea brasiliensis. The anti-inflammatory properties of the isolated compounds were evaluated on the basis of their ability to inhibit the production of nitric oxide (NO) and tumuor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in lipopolysacc...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Possible Mechanisms of Antihypertensive Activity of Loranthus micranthus: An African Mistletoe
Loranthus micranthus (LM), also called African mistletoe is a major Nigerian Loranthaceae plant used traditionally to treat hypertension. The methanolic leaf extract of the plant (LMME) has been shown to elicit anti-hypertensive activity in rats but mechanism remains unclear. This study was undertaken to study the effect of LM on pressor-induced contraction of rat aorta smooth muscles and serum...
متن کاملBiochemical Changes in Wistar Rats on Oral Doses of Mistletoe (Loranthus micranthus)
Problem statement: To evaluate the effects of the water extract of the leaves of mistletoe (Loranthus micranthus) (traditionally used antidiabetic and antihypertensive) in male albino Wistar rats. Approach: The animals were divided into 4 groups (n = 6). Water extract of L. micranthus leaves was administered in graded doses of 0, 275, 551 and 827 mg kg body weight (wt) of experimental animals f...
متن کاملImmunomodulatory activity of a lupane triterpenoid ester isolated from the eastern Nigeria mistletoe, Loranthus micranthus (Linn).
OBJECTIVE To provide further evidence for the ethnomedicinal use of the Eastern Nigeria mistletoe, Loranthus micranthus (L. micranthus), as an immunostimulant. METHODS Solvent fractions from the crude extract of the mistletoe plant was obtained and screened by the cell mediated delayed type hypersensitivity reaction (DTHR) model in mice. Then the immunomodulatory potentials of a major lupane ...
